Gel polish on natural nails, extensions or PolyGel? We explain the differences so you can choose the technique that fits your nails and your lifestyle.
You sit down for a manicure thinking “I just want beautiful nails” – and then you hear the words gel polish, extensions and PolyGel. They sound alike, yet each technique solves a different problem. Here is a short, honest overview to help you work out which one is closest to what you have in mind.
Gel polish – colour and shine on your natural nail
Gel polish is a thin coating applied directly onto your own nail and cured under a lamp. It does not add length and doesn't really change the shape of the nail – it simply gives it long-lasting colour and gloss.
- A great fit if you like the length of your own nails and they are reasonably strong.
- It looks natural and delicate.
- As a general guide, it lasts around 2–3 weeks.
Nail extensions – the length and shape you want
Extensions mean building an artificial nail, most often in gel, over your natural one. This lets us create a length and shape your own nail couldn't reach: almond, ballerina, stiletto, square.
- Ideal if you dream of longer nails, or if yours break before they ever grow out.
- They open the door to bolder nail art and more dramatic shapes.
- They need regular infills, because your natural nail keeps growing underneath.
PolyGel – the happy medium
PolyGel combines qualities of gel and acrylic. It has a putty-like texture that doesn't run, so it can be shaped precisely before it is cured under a lamp. The result is strong yet comparatively lightweight.
- Well suited to reinforcing weak nails or adding moderate length.
- It creates a natural-looking, elegant finish.
- Like extensions, it needs an infill as the nail grows.
How to choose
Before you decide, ask yourself a few questions:
- Am I happy with the length of my nails? If so, gel polish is often all you need.
- Do my nails break easily? PolyGel or a gel overlay can give them the support they lack.
- Do I want a shape and length I don't have? Then extensions are your answer.
- What does my day look like? Manual work, sport and caring for little ones all matter when choosing a length.
There is no “better” or “worse” technique – only the right one for a particular person. Sometimes the best solution is a combination, such as a PolyGel overlay finished with gel polish.
During your consultation we always look at the condition of your natural nails first – whether they are thin, whether they split, how they grow. Only then do we suggest a technique, because a good result starts with a healthy nail, not with the latest trend.
The aftercare is the same
Whatever you choose, the rules are similar: cuticle oil, gloves for housework, no peeling and timely infills. If you notice tenderness, discolouration or swelling around a nail, hold off on a new coating and, if in doubt, see a doctor.
The most beautiful manicure is the one that feels like a natural extension of you.
