Aquarelle Lips

Aquarelle Lips: a natural flush of colour

3 min readMarta Gercheva

Aquarelle Lips is a permanent make-up technique that gives lips a soft, natural tint. Find out how it works, what to expect and how to prepare.

Remember the soft flush your lips get after a walk in the cold or a cup of hot tea? Fresh, alive, effortlessly natural. That is the idea behind Aquarelle Lips – a technique that doesn't “paint on” a mouth, but gently restores colour and definition to the lips you already have.

What are Aquarelle Lips?

Aquarelle Lips is a permanent make-up technique in which pigment is applied softly in blended layers – like watercolour on paper. Instead of a solid outline and a lipstick effect, the result is a sheer, natural tint that brightens the whole face.

The technique is a good fit if you:

  • have pale lips or uneven natural colour;
  • want your lips to look fresher without daily lipstick;
  • would like a clearer yet soft lip line;
  • prefer a natural result to bold make-up.

How the procedure goes

Everything starts with a conversation. We discuss the shade you'd like – from delicate peach to a richer pink or red – and tailor it to your natural lip colour and skin tone. Then we map out the shape, carefully following the natural lines of your lips. The pigment is built up gradually for an even, soft colour.

If you're unsure about the shade, lean towards the softer option. Colour can always be deepened at the touch-up, whereas going the other way is far more difficult.

What to expect afterwards

For the first few days your lips may be slightly swollen and sensitive, and the colour will look much brighter than the final result. The skin then heals and flakes, and the shade may look paler for a while. The true colour emerges gradually over a few weeks.

As a general guide, a touch-up is done after about 4–6 weeks, and results usually last 1–2 years, depending on your skin and lifestyle.

Preparation and contraindications

If you are prone to cold sores

The procedure can trigger a cold sore in people who are prone to them. So if you have ever had cold sores, please consult your doctor before the appointment – they can advise whether preventive treatment is needed. The procedure is never carried out during an active outbreak.

When to wait

Permanent make-up isn't done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, on active inflammation in the area, if you are prone to keloid scarring, or with certain health conditions and medications. If in doubt, speak to a doctor.

Aftercare

  1. Keep your lips moisturised with the recommended product.
  2. Don't pick at scabs or flakes.
  3. Avoid very hot and spicy food for the first few days.
  4. Protect your lips from direct sun, and later use a lip balm with SPF.
The loveliest colour is the one that makes people say “you look so fresh”, not “which lipstick is that?”
